Ashtamudi Lake

Prospering peacefully in the Kollam district of Kerala is Ashtamudi Lake, This 16 km long lake is the second largest lake in Kerala, which has found its way into the sea through the Neendakara estuary. one of the most visited backwaters in India. It is one of the richest lakes in South India in terms of the population regarding flora and aqua-fauna with hundreds of species thriving under its waters.

Today, Ashtamudi Lake is more of a commercial centre as it has been witnessing innumerable tourists every year on account of its exotic beauty spread all across the town. The history of this lake is unknown, however, its discussion is found in the texts of Ibn Battuta. The name Ashtamudi is derived from its structure in the form of eight diverging branches.It is the entrance to the famous backwaters of Kerala and the houseboat rides here are extremely famous. Once you are in the vicinity of Ashtamudi Lake, it’s wonderful aura can be easily felt. You will definitely be surprised by its vast stretch with numerous houseboats chilling on its surface and the several birds producing melody all around, eventually getting you lost in the ecstasy of nature. Cruises here give you a deeper look at the heart and spirit of the backwaters. The boat ride is offered by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) Kollam. The tourists often take a ride between Kollam and Alappuzha, which is one of the most popular and longest backwater cruises in Kerala. This magical eight hour journey will give you an unforgettable experience of the stunning coconut groves, palm trees, red cliffs, and more. The major river discharging into the Ashtamudi is the Kallada River, formed by the confluence of three other rivers, namely, Kulathupuzha, Chenduruni, and Kalthuruthy.



Ashtamudi Lake is popular amongst tourists for its houseboat and lake resorts as well. Fishing is another activity which can be done in the rich waters of Ashtamudi Lake. The famous Chinese fishing nets, which are laid on the water of the lake, is another attraction. These nets are called Cheena Vala and they have former links with China.
The area experiences a tropical climate with heavy rainfall during the monsoon season. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid visiting Ashtamudi Lake during monsoons. If you are looking forward to enjoying the best of Ashtamudi backwaters, then the best time to visit this wondrous beauty is from November until the end of March when climatic conditions are cool and pleasant.
