Kollam

Achankovil is a small village in the deep western ghat forests of Kerala, in Pathanapuram tehsil of Kollam district in the Indian state of Kerala and is known for its amazing natural beauty and the famous Achankovil temple. The river which originates from this particular area , village and the temple is named after Achan Kovil which means the shrine of Achan or the supreme deity . While the temple and the village is in Kollam district a major portion of the river falls in Pathanamthitta.

Prospering peacefully in the Kollam district of Kerala is Ashtamudi Lake, This 16 km long lake is the second largest lake in Kerala, which has found its way into the sea through the Neendakara estuary. one of the most visited backwaters in India. It is one of the richest lakes in South India in terms of the population regarding flora and aqua-fauna with hundreds of species thriving under its waters.

A rare entity among the temple architecture of Kerala, cave temples are few and arouse great curiosity. Kottukkal cave temple, also known as Kal-tri-kovil in Malayalam, is an existing example of rock cut architecture, built between 6th and 8th centuries CE. It is situated in the village of Kottukkal, near Anchal, Kollam district, Kerala. The name Kothu-kkal (which means Kothiya Kallu- carved rock) is a reference to a rock cut shrine. Jatayu Earth Centre is the world’s largest bird sculpture . The statue symbolizes Women Safety and Honour and relates to the incident of Seeta-apaharanam (Abduction of Sita). It is believed that Jatayu fell on the rocks in Chadayamangalam after his wings were clipped by Ravana while he tried to save Seeta from being abducted. Designed by Rajiv Anchal, It is the first PPP tourism initiative in the state of Kerala under the BOT model.

An array of beach activities attracts huge flocks of tourists throughout the year to the pristine Kollam Beach. The panoramic visuals of the Arabian Sea are enchanting. Kollam Beach, also known as Mahatma Gandhi Beach, is a beach at Kollam city in the Indian state of Kerala. The beach also features a park of international standard, the Mahatma Gandhi Park, which was inaugurated on 1 January 1961 by the then Vice President of India, Zakir Hussain.

Kumbhavurutty Waterfalls is a beautiful natural falls situated 7 Kms away from the Achankovil & located very near to famous Courtallam Falls. It is located on the Achankovil - Shencottah Road of Kollam district, Kerala. This 25 m high fall nestles in charming surroundings enveloped by luxuriant foliage. The Kerala Forest Department has started an Eco-Contact Centre here. The travelers can see wild animals also if lucky because the waterfall is very close to the thick Konni Forest area.

Munroe Island- Mitali or Mundrothuruthu is an inland island located at the confluence of Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River, in Kollam district, Kerala, South India. Munroe Island is a hidden pearl in the backwaters which is composed of a cluster of 8 islands. Each of them is separated by small water channels and lakes. Munroe Island is located about 27 km from Kollam. The place is named in honour of Resident Colonel John Munroe, of the former princely state of Travancore.
