Banasura Sagar dam across the Karamanathodu River, a tributary of River Kabini, near to Kalpetta, is considered to be the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia. The dam is ideally placed in the foothills of Banasura hills, which got its name from 'Banasura', the son of King Mahabali, the famous ruler of Kerala. It is said that 'Banasura' undertook severe penance on the top of the hills. Banasura hill is the third largest peak in the Western Ghats.

If you are an admirer of soothing natural beauty and if you love to have an adventure trip, then Chembra Peak in Wayanad, will be a perfect stop for you. Eight kilometers south of Kalpetta, near to the town of Meppadi, lays the highest peak in Wayanad, the Chembra Peak (2,100 m). Chembra peak adjoins Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu and Vallarimala in Kozhikode. From the town of Meppadi you can reach the peak through walking.

A trip to Edakkal Caves is like a journey into our forgotten past. Located 10 kms from Sulthan Bathery, they have provided historians with great information regarding the lives and habits of our ancestors. The Bathery Jain Temple, dating back to the 13th century, is said to have been built in the prevalent architectural style of the then reigning Vijayanagar Dynasty. Tipu Sultan set up his battery at this site, and today the entirety of Sulthan Bathery is named after the same. One is immediately made aware of the sanctity and colourful past that shrouds this temple in both grandeur and mystique.

Kuruvadweep or Kuruva Island comprises a cluster of islets over the middle of Kabini River in Wayanad that is popular for the boat rides it offers on specially crafted bamboo rafts. Spread over 950 acres of land, Kuruva Island is popular for its diverse flora and fauna. These islands contain two small fresh water lakes. They are also a known safe haven for migratory birds along with hornbills, parrots and many butterfly species.

Located on the southern edge of Wayanad about 5 kms south of Vythiri town is the Lakkidi View point. Often referred to as the ‘Gateway of Wayanad’ , there are nine hairpin curves from Adivaram (Downhill) to Lakkidi through steep mountains and a journey through the serpentine ghat pass is worth an experience. Located 29 km from Kalpetta in Wayanad district, this waterfall is one of the topmost attractions in Wayanad. The three tiered waterfall, at a height of 300m is the biggest waterfall in Wayanad and the second largest in Kerala. The name ‘Meenmutty’ derived from the concept that the fishes are blocked here. ‘Meen’ means ‘fish’ and ‘Mutty’ means ‘blocked’ and thus ‘Meenmutty’.

Established in 1973, the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is contiguous to the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the north east and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu on the southeast. Rich in biodiversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

Drives to Wayanad are full of many memorable vantage points that offer one mesmerising views of the valley below. The Neelimala viewpoint is easily among the upper echelon in the district.
