The management lays emphasis on scientific conservation with due consideration for the general lifestyle of the tribals and others who live in and around the forest region. The Sanctuary has a large population of pachyderms and has been declared a Project Elephant site.Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary offers two choices to visitors – a one hour jeep ride and a three hour trek. Most people opt for the jeep safari.
Also known as Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, this area is home to a large variety of wild animals such as Indian Bison, tigers, elephants, and deer, Panthers, jungle cats, civet cats, monkeys, wild dogs and bears. Here, you can find deers, elephants, barking deers, panthers, wild cats, Indian bison, tigers, peafowls, peacocks, woodpeckers, and cranes. Also known as Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, among birds, you can possibly spot peacocks, babblers, cuckoos, owls, woodpeckers, jungle fowls and peafowls. This sanctuary is a part of Nilgiri Bioreserve along with Nagarhole and Bandipur area of Karnataka.
The dense forest of Muthanga has rich populations of plants and animals. There are several reasons for such biodiversity. Annual rainfall of 3000 – 4000 mm and fertile soil create an ideal situation for life forms to thrive. Muthanga is part of ecologically sensitive Nilgiri biosphere, the protected area that spans about 5500 sq. kms in the hilly regions of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Muthanga reserve, which is 345 sq. kms in area, is connected to wildlife sanctuaries at Mudumalai and Bandipur
