The moment you enter Nedumkayam Rainforest, you feel like the humdrum of daily life slowly melting away and the virgin scent of the forest taking over your senses. Around 15 km from Nilambur, it is loved by all who visit for the dense forest and lush greenery on display. People rave about the fresh air and clear water that flows through, along with rare species of flora and fauna. Nedumkayam Rainforest is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and is one among the numerous reasons to visit Malappuram.
The forest zone of Nedumkayam is rich with greenery and is home to a number of animal species such as elephants, bison, tiger, rabbit, blue monkey, bear, wild cat and deers. Travellers can enter this zone only after obtaining permission for the Forest Department as stringent measures are taken to protect the area. The wooden rest house built in the forest premises during the British colonial times is still in use, offering a fantastic panoramic view of grazing grounds of wild elephants and deer. Trekking and hiking trails are a huge crowd attractor. Nedumkayam rainforest is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The dense forests of the region make up the New Amarambalam Reserved Forest and are home to almost all of the mammals in the Western Ghats and more than 200 species of birds, hence classifying it as an Important Bird Area. Although prior permission is needed by the Indian Forest Service to enter the forest premises, it is well worth the hassle!
