Kollam beach is one among the few beaches in Kerala with a lifeguard outpost. Kollam Beach is also the first 'Beach Wedding Destination' in Kerala. This pretty beach is surrounded by fishing settlements, making it a vantage point for watching Chinese fishing nets and traditional boats out on the sea. The beach also has a bustling fish market, where you can haggle for the catch of the day in the morning. Chinese fishing nets, Chinese water pots and sampan-like boats can be seen even to this day, reminding a period when Kollam, known as Quilon during the Portuguese rule, was a major port frequented by Arab, Roman, Chinese and Dutch traders. The red-and-white Tangasseri Lighthouse is a major landmark on the beach. Over 144 feet high, it was built in 1902.
Kollam was once a favourite settlement of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English in succession before Independence. Ruins of Portuguese / Dutch forts and 18th-century churches near the port remain as a memento of the Portuguese and Dutch rule of the area.
One can indulge in fun activities here or opt for boat ride. In Mahatma Gandhi Park, A 10-meter-tall statue of a mermaid is installed in the middle of the park; children can enjoy riding different swings here. A part of Kollam Beach acts as a major port for international trade of spices and is one of Malabar’s oldest ports. At a short distance from Kollam beach lays a popular attraction of Kerala, Ashtamudi Lake. The lake is popular for houseboat cruising. Short canal cruises to the nearby island village of Tangasseri are enjoyed by the visitors.
