It is famed for long stretches of beaches and numerous mosques. The town has contributed massively to the trade and economy of Malabar, being one of the oldest ports in South India. It is a green fringed waterway situated in proximity to Ponnani town. What attracts visitors to this lake is the boat race held here annually during Onam season. Visitors can watch this race from pavilions built for spectators.
Approximately two dozen country boats participate in the race which truly is a delightful sight. Water sports facilities and other entertainment activities are available in Biyyam Kayal to engage the travellers. A boat race is conducted here on the third day of Onam celebrations every year, which is also a prime attraction of the lake.
Ponnani has a history that dates back to centuries. Remarks about Ponnani Juma Masjid can be found in the colonial historian William Logan’s Malabar Manual. This town was once the second capital of Malabar and served as an abode of power for Samoothiri Kings.
