The Malabar Botanical Garden & Institute for Plant Sciences (MBGIPS) situated on the south east border of the historic Calicut has over 40 acres of land of which about 15 acres is marshy land and the remaining part is a hilly terrain providing diverse habitats for varieties of plants and gradually slopes from a panoramic hillock to a flat wetland of sledges.
Being situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats, one of the hotspots of earth’s biodiversity, the conservation program is initiated with an objective to create a live gene bank of aquatic plants, the MBGIPS conserves the various groups in specialized sections viz., Sarovar and Aquagene (Aquatic plant Conservatory and nursery), Water Queens (Germplasm collection of Waterlilies), Sanjeevani and Sarpagandha (Herbal garden and nursery), Rheedea (Live Hortus Malabaricus), Star Forest (Mythological Garden), Apushpi (Bryophytes and Pteridophytes) Bodhi (Plants of the epics), Janakiya (Endangered plants in greenhouses), Sugandhi (Spices garden), Rockery (Silaramam), Butterfly garden (Shalabaramam), Gardenia (Ornamental garden), etc. This centre serves the dual cause of ecological conservation as well as education. The MBGIPS is about 10 km away from Calicut city by road leading to Pantheerankavu via Mankavu. The Garden is spread over an area of about 40 acres.
