Cheeyappara and Valara Waterfalls

Located on the Kochi-Madurai Highway (National Highway 49), the Cheeyappara Falls and Valara falls are an on-the-way tourist attraction. Valara waterfall is often mentioned together with Cheeyappara fall. They both are roadside attractions of Cochin – Munnar highway. However, the distance between them is about 12 kms. It falls between Munnar and Cochin, in the district of Idukki, Kerala. Cascading through seven tiers of stones, these falls are a force of nature that you can not only see and experience but dip your toes into and enjoy. The surroundings of the waterfall complement its opulent natural splendour. Evergreen forests stretch out for as much as two acres around the falls, making it an active adventure and trekking spot. Several species of exotic plants and animals can be found in the neighbouring area, enclosed in the casket of a dense forest.

At the height of 1000 feet above sea level, the Cheeyappara Falls are a part of a chain of waterfalls that descend from the Periyar River that originates in the Western Ghats. It forms the base camp for several treks or walking trails that start off in this area. The cascade has an inherent natural magnificence unlike other waterfalls in the state, which is why it is now being classified as an ecotourism destination. On the opposite side, a valley stretches out into a vast expanse, swallowing the fast-flowing water into its body. Occasionally, this view gets covered up by hanging clouds, so it all depends on your luck.
Valara Waterfalls is one of the most enchanting and amazing tourist spots in this region. Unlike Cheeyappara, Valara falls are not right next to the road. It is not too far either. Located about 50 metres or a bit more from the highway, can be seen in its full glory right from the road.

Valara, which comprises a chain of waterfalls surrounded by lush green forests, is home to a variety of animals and birds is situated 42 km away from Munnar.  The stream that creates the waterfall is surrounded by dense growth of trees all around. The patch of rock where water cascades down is the only exception. The cascade is alive even in summer, however the size is greatly reduced then. There is no access to the waterfall. So the only thing to do is view it from the road side. There are a few shops across the road. Time permits, can settle with a coffee at the top floor of the restaurant, enjoying fabulous view of the jungle
The flawless look, fabulous views and the gushing waterfall makes it a place definitely worth visiting. It is the best tourist destination for visitors especially for all the nature lovers, aspiring photographers, and romantic getaway.
