The great stretch of coconut groves along the beach enhances the charm of the beach. Considered a swimmer’s paradise, take one step in and you are greeted by stretches of golden sands, with shallow waters that border Velliyamkallu. It is also important to note that it is here, during November -December annually, that endangered Olive Ridley turtles come in to lay eggs.
The turtle season is in September when you can see the turtles visiting the beach searching for places to lay and hatch eggs. Since the children of the area started to care for the endangered turtles in the 1990s, all the local population has grown involved in trying to protect the turtles as well as force changes in local industrial activities which has resulted in extreme land erosion. Turtles return to the same place to lay their eggs, so the frequent changes to topography leaves them very confused. There is a nature conservation centre here, ‘Theeram’, started by the fishermen to save these turtles. You can visit the conservation hatchery and see the baby turtles before they are returned to the sea.
