Paramekkavu Temple Situated at round east - outskirts of the Vadakkumnathan temple ground - Paramekkavu is the dominant partner of Thrissur pooram. The main deity is "devi" (vaishnavy - among sapthamathruka). As per legend, devi came with "Kuruppal" (head of an aristocratic Nair family) from Thirumadhamkunnu (famous sapthamatha temple in malappuram district some 80 kms from Thrissur) on his umbrella. There is a "mekkavu" in this temple in which is the "Kodungallur bhagavathy" as per another legend. Besides pooram "Vela" is another main function.
You can always explore the temple premises and admire the beauty of the structure of the temple. There are several animals in the temple like elephants and peacocks that you can admire. Apart from offering a Pooja at the temple you can also look out for the several cultural activities that take place in the temple at all times. The Thrissur Pooram festival is also a must attend when you visit this temple. You can also listen to the popular temple orchestra also known as the Panchavadyam, which is a tradition of many Kerala temples. The orchestra at the Paramekkavu temple is called the Palachottil Melom.
A lot of people come to visit for temple festivities, and one must consider visiting during April and May for being a part of the spectators during the Thrissur Pooram festival
