Varikkassery Mana


Varikkassery Mana is an old Nalukettu Tharavadu in the place of Manissery in Ottapalam Town, which is an old Ancestral home used by the Namboothiri Clan from Kerala for more than 1000 years. The traditional home of one of the most aristocratic Namboothiri families of Valluvanad. The heartthrob of erstwhile Malabar is known for its architectural beauty.

 The Mana was built by Varikkassery Ravi Namboothirippad in the early twentieth century. ArchaeologyIn 4 Acres, Varikkassery Mana consists of one Nalukettu, two Pathayappuras : one to the south and other to the west , A Sreekrishna temple, Oottupura and a marvelous large pond with kulappura.NalukettuNalukettu-Architecture is the traditional architecture of a typical Kerala-house. Nalukettu-structure is typically a rectangular structure where four halls are joined together with four verandas to form an open quadrangle . The four halls on the sides are named Vadakkini, Kizhakkini, Thekkini and Padinjatti . Each of these halls has its own well-defined functional importance. Nalukettu is the main building of Varikkassery Mana.

The house is face towards west direction, so that first you can reach at padinjattini, this was a place for performing arts of namboothiris lived here. a wide corridor is situated along with this. a central courtyard is focus there, this square structure is completely open aired, direct sunlight reached here. at the corner of padinjattini, there is a stair made with wooding. padinjattini leads to another temple structure called vadakkini. a holy pooja room present at the corner of vadakkini known as thevarappura. the entrance to the thevarappura is strictly prohibited. the kitchen and food section is arranged in the east corner of the mana. and also here is a dining hall named oottupura to serve food for 50 peoples at a time.

Most parts of this building were built during the first decade of the 20th century. The foundation of the building was constructed as per the measurements done by Perumthachan. It was Velanezhi Jathavedan Namboodiri who designed the Nalukettu building, as per the Vastu Shastra. Varikkassery Mana is a common location for Malayalam films. More than hundred movies have already been shot here. These include films like Devasuram, Aaram thampuran, Rappakal, Thooval Kottaram, Madambi, Drona etc.
